Toyota Tacoma on a HillsideSince its debut four years ago, the Toyota Tacoma has been one of the most sought-after midsize trucks in America. Its versatility, spacious

cabin, and capability make it one of the best multipurpose vehicles. This is the type of truck that works wonders in both off-road and on-road conditions. The new model has undergone a major transformation, making it the number one option in its category. So if you’ve been thinking about upgrading, there’s no better time than now.

At Auburn Toyota, we have the entire Tacoma lineup at your disposal, as well as a wonderful team of experts ready to help you purchase the model that best suits you.

Meet the Toyota Tacoma

The Toyota Tacoma is a midsize truck designed for off-road fun and urban living. Long-time fans enjoy its versatility and all the features that complement the truck. Another factor that makes this model so popular is its towing and hauling capabilities, as trucks this size don’t tend to perform well in this segment. Finally, the safety and reliability the Tacoma provides drivers with is what really sets it apart. Toyota is known for its reliable, ultrasafe cars, and the Tacoma is no different. If we could only use one adjective to describe it, it would be all-round.

New Updates on the Toyota Tacoma

Starting at an MSRP of $31,500, the new Toyota Tacoma looks and feels nothing like its old versions due to an impressive redesign. The biggest and most notorious change is in the interior, as many users found the driver’s position to be a bit awkward and all the seats to be a bit on the hard side. In this year’s model, Toyota has adjusted the driver’s seat position, using seats with a more cushioned feel. The usual rugged-looking knobs and bolts have also been replaced with modern-looking ones, and a larger touchscreen is now the centerpiece of the dashboard.

Toyota also left behind the V-6 engine used in all Tacomas and replaced it with a new turbocharged four-cylinder engine. This decision caused concern among truck fans, but it was quickly put to rest when the lineup came out and the Tacomas performed even better than before. Another update is the addition of two more off-road-oriented trims with more advanced powertrains and features.

Engine and Performance

All trim levels use a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that can be paired with either a six-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The engine comes in three forms: a turbo four paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission found in the base trim that makes 228 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque; a more powerful version of that engine that produces 278 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque when paired with an eight-speed, or 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque when paired with a six-speed manual; and a hybrid powertrain called i-Force Max, which combines the turbocharged engine with a hybrid battery and electric motor for a total of 326 horsepower and 645 pound-feet of torque.

Note that the i-Force Max engine option is only available on TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited trims.

Users can choose between rear- or all-wheel drive and two different rear suspensions. Previous Tacoma versions used a body-on-frame construction, but the new Toyota Tacoma offers both leaf and coil rear springs. SR, SR5, and TRD PreRunner trims are equipped with the former, while the remaining trims come with the latter.

Models with the new coil springs perform exceptionally well in the city, offering a smooth and refined ride. Off-road models offer significantly improved performance over previous versions and outperform any midsize truck in the off-road category. Braking and handling are also noteworthy, as they’re agile, quick, and light.

Features of the Toyota Tacoma

The new Toyota Tacoma is available in either XtraCab or Double Cab configurations. The first option, the XtraCap, is a two-seat, two-door cab with expanded storage behind the seats and a 6-foot bed, while the second option, the Double Cab, offers five seats, four doors, and a bed of five or six feet. This new model offers eight trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD PreRunner, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter.

The entry-level trim, the SR, is a work truck that comes with standard features including LED headlights, 17-inch steel wheels, an 8-inch touchscreen, a Class IV trailer hitch, keyless entry on the driver’s door, and a composite bed construction to prevent corrosion. The SR5 adds some enhancements, such as 17-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry on all doors, blind spot warning, and bed rails. The TRD PreRunner is built for the desert, with a raised front suspension, leather-wrapped steering wheel, locking rear differential, automatic climate control, digital instrument panel, and underbody fuel tank protection.

The TRD Sport drops the features of the previous model and adds 18-inch wheels, an LED bedliner, suspension dampers, and a six-speaker audio system. The TRD Off-Road adds 17-inch wheels with all-terrain tires, remote reservoir suspension dampers, and skid plates on the fuel tank, engine, and transfer case. The Limited offers a wider selection of features, including a sunroof, 18-inch chrome wheels, synthetic leather upholstery, a bed storage box, power running boards, an integrated trailer brake controller, a power tailgate, and a wireless trailer camera.

The TRD Pro is a combination of the TRD Off-Road and Limited and adds 33-inch tires, 18-inch TRD Pro wheels, a performance exhaust, custom front and rear bumpers, a new grille, prewired auxiliary switches, IsoDynamic front seats, and a front sway bar disconnect. Trailhunter adds underbody skid plates, rock rails, 18-inch bronze alloy wheels, an ARB modular bed utility bar, and Old Man Emu shock absorbers to its predecessor.
